A fracture is a condition where the bone is broken - either partially or completely. Injury to the bone occurs when bones are put under more pressure than they can sustain. Fractures are different in the way they break, the symptoms they show, and the duration they take to heal.
If the force applied on the bone exceeds its resistance by a slight margin, the person may get away with only a crack without displacing the bone as in a “closed fracture.” In case the extreme force is applied on the bone, it may break in two and stick out of the skin as in an “open fracture.”
Fractures also vary in the type of fracture line that can be transverse or oblique. Bones may also shatter into three or more pieces.
Among the many causes of fractures, the most common are:
Overuse: Repetitive activities, especially in the case of athletes, tire muscles and passes the stress over to the bone, which results in fractures.
Trauma: Falling from a height, vehicle accidents, or direct hit by a heavy object may also lead to fractures.
Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, which causes them to break easily.
Major fractures are very painful, and the dislocation of the bone is visible. However, this may not always be the case. The most common symptoms in all types of fractures are:
Our experts at Clement carefully assess a fracture to understand the extent of the injury. Typically, X-rays are taken to get a clear image of the bone and fracture. They will then suggest a treatment plan in accordance with the condition. In the case of misaligned bones, traction can be used to gently and steadily pull the bone in place. In other cases, cast immobilization, a functional cast or brace, or fixation with the help of surgery is suggested. Surgery entails offering support to the bone with the help of special screws, metal plates, or rods.
At Clement, we ensure a comfortable treatment plan is chalked out, and you face no difficulty during the treatment or recovery. For more information and for appointments, call Clement Podiatry at (415) 898-4828 or book an appointment online.
